Santeria is a religion, that is misunderstood. It’s a mixture of the Afro-Caribbean religion raditions, with some elements of Roman Catholic. It is also known as La Regla Lucumi and the Rule of Osha. Santeria is a fusions of religions that grew out of the slave trade in Cuba. (1)
The religion focuses on building relationships between human beings and powerful, but mortal, spirits, called Orishas. An Orisha is a manifestation of Olodumare (God).
People believe that these spirits will help them in life, if follow the right ritual rituals, and let them achieve their life’s mission that God gave them.
The religion relies heavily on oral relay of traditions.
Secrecy is crucial. One must be initiated to before information is freely given to them.
This is because the public does not have access to details about beliefs, ritual, symbolism, practices.
Priest are called Babalochas(males) or Iyalochas(females), Santeros(males) or Santeras(females). The term Olorisha is used for either genders.
Botanicas are religious goods stores, that sell various items used to practice. The carry candles, charms, statues, herbs, and many other things that can be used in the religion.
